Reading is inherently a problem solving activity. What characterises successful readers and writers is not just their knowledge of spelling and sound systems, the characteristics and purposes of different text types and how punctuation is used but their ability to continuously apply, cross-connect, generalise and infer from them. Teachers who help children to do this promote rapid and secure progress and contribute to the wider development of children's thinking skills.
